  • Wind energy electricity generation is a new technology in South Africa. South Africa has abundant wind, especially along the coast. The result reflected by a Capacity Building in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (CaBEERE) study, commissioned by the Department of Minerals and Energy, indicates that South Africa will have to contribute 2 000MW of its renewable energy from the wind source as part of meeting the 10 000GWh target within the next 10 years. EDC has positioned itself to be among the pioneers in the introduction of wind power generation.

    Darling Wind Power Demonstration Project

The South African government has recognised the importance of stimulating the use of wind energy and requested the EDC to become a co-sponsor of the Darling National Demonstration Wind Farm Project.

This project will generate 5.2MW and has secured a favourable Power Purchase Agreement with the City of Cape Town.

EDC is also positioning itself to take a meaningful stake in the establishment of a second phase project. EDC intends to play a leading role in facilitating the establishment of viable wind projects. The strategy of CEF in relation to the wind generation industry is to co-invest with local and international partners to develop the wind generation industry in South Africa.
