Liquid petroleum gasThe Energy Development Corporation (EDC) is in discussions with the Department of Minerals and Energy and with Eskom to do a pilot study on the supply of liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The purpose of this exercise is to understand the cost components that make up the supply chain as well as to find means of distributing LPG so that it can compete with other energy options such as illuminating paraffin (IP). This pilot will also be instrumental in giving information that might be key to the Eskom's initiative, Demand Side Management. iGas, a subsidiary of CEF, acts as the agent of the state for the development of the hydrocarbon gas industry in South Africa. EDC is in discussions with Osram, the manufacturers of energy-saving fluorescent lamps, to place 5-million energy-efficient globes into residential homes in South Africa. The energy efficient globes have a lifespan of 10 years and save about 50W power use per globe. The CDM potential of this project is quite substantial. A memorandum of understanding between CEF and Osram has already been signed to proceed with further investigation with the project. |
